Day 113

A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.
Lao Tzu

The plan was to get up this morning and go for a ride.  Unfortunately my father-in-law needed his garden dug out and the dirt carted out.  I got a load into the wagon and the wagon had a flat so I needed to empty the cart, fix the flat and then reload.  Then dump the dirt, come back, reload the cart, dump the dirt and so on.  Then I mowed his and my lawn and then weed whacked.  Finally I was free to get on the bike.

It was a beautiful day.  I headed southeast from my house just trying to slowly up my miles.  I need to get miles on my legs.  Spring is finally popping out all around me and it was pure joy to ride.  My legs are starting to come back.

Day 112

Practice puts brains in your muscles.
Sam Snead

Spent most of the day with my mom but the weather was so nice I had to get on the bike, even if it was for a short ride.  Half way in my legs kicked in.  They will come back.  Supposed to be nice tomorrow

Day 111

Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after the other.
Walter Elliot

I mentioned the other day that I was cleaning out the garage and found some old jerseys and some bib shorts.  What I didn’t mention was that I found a patch from an organized ride that I did in 1990.  It was from the River Rendezvous Tour from Zanesville to Marietta.  I remember the ride well.  I think I did it on my old Schwinn Traveler and it was sixty-five miles each way.  We rode there, slept in dorms and rode back the next day.

The cycling itself was wonderful.  Lots of rolling hills and beautiful scenery.  I just went to their website and they are still doing it.  You can check it out here.

Day 110

A little learning is a dangerous thing; Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring.
Alexander Pope

The rain and wind persisted most of the day yesterday.  In the evening I played in a poker in a small tournament and as I left it began to snow.  Give me a break!

I’m so disgusted I think I’ll go do some bike maintenance.

Day 109: Cleaning Up

If we can clean up our world, I’ll bet you we can achieve warp drive.
William Shatner

It’s raining again with high winds.

The plan is to take my mom to the doctor’s.  After that I’m going to try and get on the bike.  In the meantime I’m cleaning up the blog.  I have a blogroll on the side of the site and it’s time to prune.  For Example;. 100 Pounds hasn’t updated his site since January.  He’s gone.  I’ll be going through each of my links and see if they are still active.

Day 108: First Real Ride

I always say don’t make plans, make options.
Jennifer Aniston

It’s been a week since I posted.  I’m a little surprised about it.  I had a bad cold for a week and then it got cold IMG_0725and rained every day.  It was forty degrees Fahrenheit with hard rains.  The fields around me were flooded and it was nasty.  I got on the bike for a couple short cold rides but nothing significant.  I decided that today would be the first real ride.  I was excited and I was ready.

I got up and it was warm outside with a lot of wind, but no rain.  Fantastic.  I could handle a little wind.  Notice in the pic on the right that there are gusts of wind at 24mph.  Ok, not a problem.

I went to the MUP in Oberlin and started riding.  The wind was tough but doable when a mile in I hit a pothole and got a flat tire.  Damn, I tried to fix it and it didn’t hold so I went back to my car and decided to take the bike to Swerve Bike Shop in Oberlin.  They are always nice to me.

On the way back to the car I saw one of the round buildings, The Oberlin Gas Lighting Company Gasholder Building.  Since I was there I decided to take a picture of it with my bike.  You get a picture of the bike, the building and my finger.

Then I went to Swerve where they fixed my tire, sold me an additional tube and adjusted my gears.

I got back in my car and was tempted to call it a day.  The wind had picked up.  The gusts had gone up to Pittsfield44mph.  I headed home.

When I approached Pittsfield I decided that I needed to ride, to hell with the wind.  I parked at the park in Pittsfield and decided to head into the wind toward Camden.  The wind was brutal.  It was like riding through molasses.

After a couple miles the wind shifted and started coming from the south.  I had to tilt the bike into the wind to stay upright.  One nice thing I noticed was that everyone was giving me plenty of room on this 55 mile per hour road.

I reached Camden and had enough.  The wind was kicking my ass so I turned around.  Just as I did I saw a Turkey Vulture eyeing me.  I figured he knew more than I did. The ride back was so much easier.

Camden

Before I left the battery in my bike computer died so I used the cyclemeter app on my iPhone to keep track of things.  This was a bit frustrating because I had no live display.

When I got back I found I only rode 6.31 miles.  That was pathetic.  It will get better.  Combine it with the flat tire ride I put in 9 miles for the day.  What can I say?

Day 100

Try to learn something about everything and everything about something.cold
Thomas Huxley

I’ve been sick for the past three days.  I played in a poker tournament on Sunday and I could feel the cold coming on.  I found myself unable to think and my throat became sore.  I got it from a sick poker player on the Friday before.  Oh well.  At least it’s not as bad as when I felt like Death on a Stick.  I took the wife to The Olive Garden and tried to heal myself with the Chicken Gnocchi soup.  I should be better soon.

It rained most of the day today but has warmed up considerably.  This will be a bike blog.

I found a fantastic set of bib shorts that made me laugh out loud.  I may get some just for the hell of it.

Day 98: Finally

A winning effort begins with preparation.
Joe Gibbs

This morning the temperature finally climbed to the sixties.  Unfortunately high winds made morning riding impossible.  I had a poker tournament in the early afternoon so wasn’t able to ride.  My riding life starts tomorrow.

Also, I was cleaning out some old boxes from my garage and found my old (at least 20 years) cycling clothing. In the box were a few jerseys, a pair of bib shorts and normal cycling shorts.  I tried them on and they fit!  The thirty pound weight loss has paid off.

Now all I have to do is keep on doing what I’m doing and get on the bike.

Day 97

He that hath a beard is more than a youth, and he that hath no beard is less than a man.
William Shakespeare

I love this video.  The beard, the bike and the joy.

I have a friend who is a banjo playing, bearded comic.  This is what I imagine he’d look like if he cycled.

Day 96

There is a thin line that separates laughter and pain, comedy and tragedy, humor and hurt.
Erma Bombeck

The other day I walked in the door and tripped over the wife’s cat!  I did gyrations and twisted my knee.  Then I fell to the ground and said words that were very close to speaking in tongues.  Damn it hurt.  Meanwhile the cat just looked at me.

Schnookie

When the wife came home I needed some sympathy so told the wife that I tripped over the cat.  She asked, “Is the cat okay?”  So much for sympathy.

For the next couple of days my knee really hurt.  Meanwhile the weather is starting to get nicer.  It was still cold but sunny.  A few times a day I would get notifications on my iPhone that so and so just finished a workout on MyFitness.  It was really annoying me.

Last night the pain started to diminish and this morning it is much better.  It is supposed to be 57f today and I plan to get on the bike, even if it is only for a short ride.
