Day 68: Comments

I’m reading a book, because I’m brainy. No, it is a book – if you don’t know, it is like a blog except bigger.
Craig Fergusoni060616pbs

Weight 272.8

I had a friend mention that he’s been to my weight loss/cycling blog a couple times.  He asked if it bothered me that very few comment and I don’t get so many hits.  I thought about that.

This site doesn’t get many hits and very few comments.  I’ve asked five friends to check in occasionally to keep me on track and only one does.  That’s okay.

I’m not doing this to get worldwide acclaim.  That is what my other blog with my writing is for.  This blog is to keep me accountable for my weight loss and fitness goals.  Once I reach those goals this will turn into a cycling blog.  If it garners an audience at all that will be nice.  If it doesn’t it will still be fun.  It’s a win win situation.

Day 67: A Childhood Diet

Do not feed children on maudlin sentimentalism or dogmatic religion; give them nature\

Luther Burbank

Weight 273.2thicksandwich

My father died when I was ten leaving seven children including a set of two-year old triplets.  We were poor.

Looking back at my diet it was mostly starches and sugars.  We never had the money for fast food but we ate a lot of bread and potatoes.  Vegetables and fruit were spare.  My sister has a severe weight problem and eventually had stomach stapling that worked for her until her death a few years later from a brain tumor.  I was never a fat kid but the poor diet hit me hard when I became an adult.  Who knows, it may have been a contributing factor in my thyroid tumor.

I can see why I didn’t control my weight and why I ballooned up to 292 pounds.  Understanding is a lot of the battle.  Spring is almost here.

Day 65: Technical Difficulties

The only time I have problems is when I sleep.
Tupac Shakur
I wrote a little today and it disappeared into the cloud never to return.  I’ll have to be more careful from now on.

Day 64: Excitement Builds

The deep roots never doubt spring will come
Marty Rubin

Weight 272

Spring is only fifteen days away.  I checked the weather and it will be in the high forties very soon.  That is warm enough to get on the bike.

Day 63: Lack of Moderation

Moderation is the center wherein all philosophies, both human and divine, meet.
Benjamin Disraeli

Weight 271.6

Played poker in the tournament all day then played in a cash game until 2:30am.  That is a bit extreme even for me.  Because of that I did no exercise.

Poker is such a sedentary activity.  I need to moderate my life a little more.  This was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up, easy money.

Day 62: Winter Blues

Melancholy were the sounds on a winter night.
Virginia Woolf

Weight 271.4

Snowing heavily.  I have a poker tournament in a little bit.  I’ll be at the felt most of the day.  Spring needs to hurry up and get here.  I have noticed the days lengthening.

Day 61: Sore

Energy is the power that drives every human being. It is not lost by exertion by maintained by it.
Germaine Greer

Weight 271allhurt

I’m incredibly sore.  I am a little surprised at how out of shape I have become.  I shouldn’t be.  A year and a half of relative inactivity should do that to a person.  I had to be up at 3:30 am to play in a freeroll poker tournament and so I got almost no sleep.

It is snowing heavily right now.  Spring is coming.

Day 60: Walk Like a Man

If you don’t like the road you’re walking, start paving another one.

I had a conversation with a friend who took a quick look at this blog.  He asked why I was waiting until it got warm to exercise.  I told him I liked cycling but didn’t have the clothing for cold weather riding and couldn’t justify the investment as I plan to drop significant tonnage.  That is when he asked me why I couldn’t do other exercise like walking?  Hmmm.  Why couldn’t I?

Everyone says that walking is so good for you.  As a matter of fact I’ve read that Michael Moore and Stephen Fry have both lost significant weight from getting out and walking.  To be honest I’ve always found it boring.  Of course, I’ve never done much of it except for when I was working.  As a UPS guy I was on my feet walking and carrying packages ten hours (or more) a day.

I thought about it and I began to think it might be a different experience if I was doing if for myself and not part of my job.   Then I realized that if I’m going to get the weight off and keep it off I’d have to maintain some kind of exercise routine.  Originally it had been cycling and cycling on a trainer in the winter.  That won’t do.  I realize now that there will be days when I need more.  In the summer months it will be swimming and cycling.  I need to include walking.

So last night I walked.  I enjoyed it.  I just did a walk around my neighborhood as you can see from my Map My Walk app.  Here are the stats. (click to make bigger)

I was surprised at the size of the development.  I also had no idea the size of Ponderosa Pines Lake.  As always I carried my camera and took a couple quick pics as the light faded.

I love old barns

Even though most of the lake was frozen there were still a lot of birds.

I’ve decided that I will do some form of exercise every day.  If not cycling it’s walking, or swimming or something.

It’s good to have friends.
