Day 61: Sore

Energy is the power that drives every human being. It is not lost by exertion by maintained by it.
Germaine Greer

Weight 271allhurt

I’m incredibly sore.  I am a little surprised at how out of shape I have become.  I shouldn’t be.  A year and a half of relative inactivity should do that to a person.  I had to be up at 3:30 am to play in a freeroll poker tournament and so I got almost no sleep.

It is snowing heavily right now.  Spring is coming.

Day 60: Walk Like a Man

If you don’t like the road you’re walking, start paving another one.
Dolly Parton

Weight 270.8

I had a conversation with a friend who took a quick look at this blog.  He asked why I was waiting until it got warm to exercise.  I told him I liked cycling but didn’t have the clothing for cold weather riding and couldn’t justify the investment as I plan to drop significant tonnage.  That is when he asked me why I couldn’t do other exercise like walking?  Hmmm.  Why couldn’t I?

Everyone says that walking is so good for you.  As a matter of fact I’ve read that Michael Moore and Stephen Fry have both lost significant weight from getting out and walking.  To be honest I’ve always found it boring.  Of course, I’ve never done much of it except for when I was working.  As a UPS guy I was on my feet walking and carrying packages ten hours (or more) a day.

I thought about it and I began to think it might be a different experience if I was doing if for myself and not part of my job.   Then I realized that if I’m going to get the weight off and keep it off I’d have to maintain some kind of exercise routine.  Originally it had been cycling and cycling on a trainer in the winter.  That won’t do.  I realize now that there will be days when I need more.  In the summer months it will be swimming and cycling.  I need to include walking.

So last night I walked.  I enjoyed it.  I just did a walk around my neighborhood as you can see from my Map My Walk app.  Here are the stats. (click to make bigger)

I was surprised at the size of the development.  I also had no idea the size of Ponderosa Pines Lake.  As always I carried my camera and took a couple quick pics as the light faded.

I love old barns

Even though most of the lake was frozen there were still a lot of birds.

I’ve decided that I will do some form of exercise every day.  If not cycling it’s walking, or swimming or something.

It’s good to have friends.

Day 59: Month 2 Summary

We did not change as we grew older; we just became more clearly ourselves
Lynn Hall

Weight 270.6

IMG_0613

I am doing great!  I have lost 22.2 pounds over the past two months.  That is 11.1 pounds a month average and my original goal was 8 pounds a month.  Now I didn’t lose 8 pounds this month, only 6.4 pounds.  I blame that on being sick for over a week.  The weather will be turning soon and I will be on the bike.  Once that happens I can expect an extra couple of pounds a month.

I have other plans which I’ll be talking about.  My clothes are starting to feel a little loose and things are going the way I wanted.

Their are two graphs below.  The first is of February and the other is since January 1st.  It’s easy to see where I got sick.  I’ll do that from now on.  Post the current monthly graph and the yearly graph too.

Day 58: A Mini-Purge

To keep the body in good health is a duty otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.

Weight 271

I am finally 100% healed.  Plus the body has been dumping the excess water and ugly stuff out of my system.

Day 57: Recumbents

“Forget past mistakes. Forget failures. Forget everything except what you’re going to do now and do it.”
– William C. Durant

Weight 273.2

Last year I went to Crisfield Maryland for a banjo retreat.  It was put on by Patrick Costello of The Daily Frail.  It is because of him that I’ve come this far with my music.  I owe him a debt.  While there I made many friends and one of them is s recumbent cyclist. I’ve seen a few of these bikes over the years and they always seemed ungainly and odd.  I’ve never seen one that made me say, I want one, until now.

I was on Bikeforums and came across this beauty.  Carbon fiber and probably ten thousand dollars but I can see myself on one in a few years..  It is made by Velokraft and it is seriously sexy.

I’m going to The 2013 Crisfield Banjo Retreat.  Who knows what I’ll find this time.

Day 56: Ain’t Nobody Got Time For That

Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted.
John Lennon

Weight 274.5

A few days ago I was playing in a poker tournament and one of the players told me he’d been reading my weight loss blog.   He told me I was destined to failure because even if I lost weight I’d gain it right back, everyone does.  I smiled and looked at him.  He was well over four hundred pounds and had more chins than a Chinese phone book.

I tried to be nice. He said that his doctor tells him to lose weight because of his high blood pressure and diabetes.  He said that pills took care of the symptoms.  Besides, he said, who had time for all of that bullshit?  I couldn’t help but smile and think of Sweet Brown.  A few hands later he raised and I went all in with my set of fours taking him out.  As he left he grabbed a few cookies.

I’ve read that most of the people on The Biggest Loser gain the weight back.  That makes sense.  They are in an intense environment and lose it without outside influences.  Once back in the real world the same reasons they became overweight come back and bite them in the ass.

I am making a long-term change in my life.  I am doing a lot more than losing weight.  I am changing my life.  Once I lose this weight, and I will lose the weight, I will keep it off.  I am planning on becoming a serious cyclist and becoming fit.  It will happen.  My fat poker friend ain’t got time for that, but I do.

Day 55:

Find out what your temptations are, and you will find out largely
what you are yourself.
Henry Ward Beecher

Weight 274.1

I’m taking it really slowly with the push-ups on the stairs.  Three sets of ten at such an incline they are relatively easy.  I will lower a step each time until the difficulty increases.  Once I’m on the floor I can get serious.

Still purging disgusting things from my body with a hard cough but each day I’m getting better.

I had a friend who reads this blog tell me that for some people bicycling is unhealthy.  I said, “How so?” and he sent me this picture.

Day 53: If Chaz Bono Can Do It

“This is as true in everyday life as it is in battle: we are given one life and the decision is ours whether to wait for circumstances to make up our mind, or whether to act, and in acting, to live.”
— Omar N. Bradley

Weight 275.3

I saw online that Chaz Bono has lost 43 pounds of the 80 pounds that he wants to lose.  It can be done.

Day 52: Ninety Percent Healed

When it is obvious that the goal cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goal; adjust the action steps to the goal.
Confucius

Weight 275.8

I feel so much better.  The wife has it now and she seems to have it worse than I did.  It’s never easy.

Back on the diet and have started a new exercise, push-ups.  My shoulder has bothered me a bit because at work I didn’t have power steering in my UPS truck for the first 30 years I drove.  I know, it’s nuts.  That’s just the way it was.

Anyway, I’m going to start with modified push-ups on the stairs and do three sets every other day.  As I progress I will lower a step until I’m on the floor.  We will see how this goes.

It’s snowing heavily and the forecast is 30 F the first week of March.  I have this fantasy that March 1st it will be sunshine and fifty but I may have to wait a couple weeks.

Another skinsuit that I like.

This evening my buddy Alan said he like the Tron suit.  I told him I’d make it look good, the jumbotron.
