About leastbest

A Middle-Aged Teamster who lives in a magical world.

Day 97

He that hath a beard is more than a youth, and he that hath no beard is less than a man.
William Shakespeare

I love this video.  The beard, the bike and the joy.

I have a friend who is a banjo playing, bearded comic.  This is what I imagine he’d look like if he cycled.

Day 96

There is a thin line that separates laughter and pain, comedy and tragedy, humor and hurt.
Erma Bombeck

The other day I walked in the door and tripped over the wife’s cat!  I did gyrations and twisted my knee.  Then I fell to the ground and said words that were very close to speaking in tongues.  Damn it hurt.  Meanwhile the cat just looked at me.

Schnookie

When the wife came home I needed some sympathy so told the wife that I tripped over the cat.  She asked, “Is the cat okay?”  So much for sympathy.

For the next couple of days my knee really hurt.  Meanwhile the weather is starting to get nicer.  It was still cold but sunny.  A few times a day I would get notifications on my iPhone that so and so just finished a workout on MyFitness.  It was really annoying me.

Last night the pain started to diminish and this morning it is much better.  It is supposed to be 57f today and I plan to get on the bike, even if it is only for a short ride.

Day 95: More Maintenance

Fruit is definitely on the maintenance diet. It’s on the lifestyle diet.
Robert Atkins

Maintenance is becoming more and more important to me so I watch these videos over and over.

Day 93

A wise man is superior to any insults which can be put upon him, and the best reply to unseemly behavior is patience and moderation.
Moliere

I am presently teaching and eighty-one year old man chess.  He wants to take it as far as he can.  I’ve started with tactics and we will start with learning the major openings and go on to opening theory, middle-games and endgames.

I’ve only known him for a couple weeks and today he looked at me and said, “You really should lose that belly!.”  I took it well as it was meant in a good way.

I feel so much better and I know I’m on the right track, but I have a long way to go.  This morning it was snowing again.  I’ll be on the bike by the end of the week.

Day 91: Adrian Legg

The way you treat yourself sets the standard for others.
Sonya Friedman

I love music and luckily nearby is a fantastic venue, Mike’s Barn.  Mike’s is an old barn that is converted to hold concerts.  It’s amazing the people he has brought in.  Last year he brought in John Hammond Jr. and Adrian Legg.  Adrian is an incredible guitarist and I was lucky enough to have a chat and picture with him.

This is me at my heaviest.  I had no idea I was that fat.  Looking at this picture I’m a little shocked.  I’m thirty pounds lighter and plan on looking at that picture every day.

Month 3 Summary

Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.
Benjamin Franklin

Weight 263.8

0C025D00-E738-4AAF-A1D6-48A2874F3752I am down 29 pounds!!!!  This is fantastic.  I have been weighing myself but ignoring it.  Remember my original goal was to lose 8.2 pounds a month.  I have surpassed that at 9.7 pounds a month.

The important thing is I’ve done all of this with diet alone. Sure I’ve worked out and walked some but not nearly enough.  Once I get on the bicycle and do daily riding things are going to make me like butter, I’ll be on a roll.

I can feel the difference too.  My clothes are fitting better and I have more energy.  I am very happy.

Now for the graphs.  The first will be the month and the other will be since January 1st.

Day 88

Maintenance is terribly important.
Manolo Blahnik

Eventually this weight loss blog will become a bicycling blog.  It is possible that the weather will improve so the plan is to spend Fridays exploring maintenance.  I don’t know that much about cycling maintenance so I plan to watch these videos over and over.

Day 87

If you’re not getting older, you’re dead.
Tom Petty

Weight loss is continuing, slow and steady.  I can feel my clothes getting looser and that is a good thing.  I continue to believe that if the weather actually improves and I can get on the bike that it will accelerate.  I believe.

Also, I spent most of the day yesterday with my mom at the hospital.  We had planned to get a CAT scan to see if her cancer was getting worse but I got a call that she had fallen and cut her nose pretty badly.  I picked her up and took her to the hospital for both the scan and stitches.

It was a brutal six hours.  Today she goes in for a blood transfusion and then chemo.

In the old days the stress and long hours would have had me eating for comfort.  Not anymore.  I am on a mission..
